GETTING STARTED
A clear place to begin.
What Docr’d (say “dock-erd”, also written Docrd) can do today, and how to find your way around.
What early access means
Docr’d is a working app that we’re still improving. You may run into bugs, unfinished details, or changes as we learn from the people using it.
If something goes wrong, write to support@getdocrd.com. Tell us what you were trying to do, what happened, and which app and device you used. We’ll do our best to help you resolve the problem and use your feedback to improve Docr’d. Please leave out private documents and sign-in codes.
1. Create your account
Choose Create an account, enter your email, and use the six-digit code in your inbox to verify it. Where offered, you can continue with Apple or Google instead. Existing desktop users can sign in with the same email address.
2. Choose where to work
The desktop app is free and keeps your library on your own computer. Reading, organizing, notes, annotations, search, and export all work there without signing in. Installers for macOS, Windows and Linux are on the downloads page and in your account under Apps & downloads.
The web app opens for any signed-in account, so you can always read and export what is already in your cloud library. Adding documents, sync, research discovery, and OCR need cloud access, which comes with a paid plan or an activated free place.
Moving from Zotero
Docr’d imports a Zotero library with its PDFs, marks, notes, tags and collections, on desktop or on the web, and can bring over what is new later. The Zotero import guide walks through it step by step, and Docr’d and Zotero compares the two. BibTeX, RIS and CSL JSON files from other reference managers import from the same place.
3. Free places and paid plans
Anyone can choose a paid plan on the Plan & billing page of their account. Every new account gets a free place when one is available; once the free places are taken, new accounts join a waitlist and places go to waiting accounts in the order they joined. Your account shows your place, or your position on the waitlist, and your allowances. A paid plan replaces a free place: starting one passes your place, or your spot on the waitlist, to the next account waiting, and if the plan ends you can rejoin the waitlist.
OCR runs in Docr’d Cloud, never on your computer, and needs an account that includes it. Paid plans run OCR from the desktop or web app on your account’s OCR allowance; on the desktop the document syncs to Docr’d Cloud and the result syncs back. Free places run OCR in the web app at Balanced quality, which may pause when the shared free budget runs out; paid plans can choose Fast, Balanced, or Max for each run.
4. Sync between desktop and web
In the desktop app, choose Sign in at the top right and enter your email. Docr’d opens a page on getdocrd.com in your browser that checks you’re human and emails your code; enter the code back in the app. If your account has cloud access, sync starts on its own. Your avatar menu shows your account and sync status.
Billing, cancellation, and refunds
Cancelling. Choose Cancel at period end under Plan & billing in your account; you don’t need to contact us, and there is no cancellation fee. Future renewals stop, your plan stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for, and you can choose Keep this plan before then to resume. Page packs are one-time purchases, so there is nothing to cancel.
Receipts and payment details. Stripe sells plans and page packs as the merchant of record, so it issues your receipts, and its name may appear on your statement alongside Docr’d. To change the card for your plan, choose Update payment method under Plan & billing in your account; you enter the new card on a page Stripe hosts. If a payment failed, it is retried with the new card when you return.
Refunds. Payments are generally non-refundable, subject to your statutory rights, Stripe Managed Payments’ refund policy, and the unused-period refunds promised in our terms. Deleting your account refunds unused plan time and unused page packs automatically. To request a payment refund, contact Link support. For a promised unused-period refund, or a problem such as a duplicate charge or a purchase the service could not fulfil, write to support@getdocrd.com. The billing terms give the full conditions, including how a refunded page pack affects your balance.
Help with signing in
I didn’t receive a code
Check your spam folder and the spelling of your email. Wait at least 60 seconds before requesting another code. Only the latest code will work. If you don’t have an account, use Create an account first.
My code has expired
Request a new code from the sign-in screen and enter the most recent code. Don’t share it with anyone.
I forgot my password
The website uses email codes instead of a password. Sign in with access to your account’s email inbox. If you need to replace a password from an older app, use password recovery.
Where are my desktop documents?
Sign in with the same account on desktop and web. With cloud access, your library, documents, notes, annotations, and finished reconstructions (with your corrections) sync between them, and missing files download when you open them. Linked files, OCR that is still running, and device preferences stay on the device where they are. When an update changes the sync format, update all your apps together.
How do I change my email or delete my account?
Open Account settings. Change email sends a code to your current address and one to the new address; enter both and you sign in with the new address from then on. Download ZIP saves every document, note and annotation in your cloud library first. Delete account cancels any active plan straight away, refunds the unused part of it and any unused page packs to your original payment method, and deletes your cloud library and sync data. It can’t be undone, but the desktop app and the files on your devices stay.
Known limits
Docr’d handles PDF annotations, notes, Markdown, and reconstruction corrections. It is not a handwriting notebook or a LaTeX editor. If the same item is changed in two places, you may be asked to pick a version; edits are not merged automatically. A file stored only in the cloud needs a connection to open unless you keep it offline.
To restore your library on a new device, you sign in with your email. That works because Docr’d holds a recovery key, which means the service can decrypt your synced data. If you set up sync with an older recovery code, sign in once on a device that still has that key to move it over; if every copy of the old key is lost first, those files cannot be recovered. See Privacy for details.
